The ideal match with SCUBA-2

Our understanding of the high-redshift Universe changed dramatically with the advent of the SCUBA array at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The next major advance in sub-mm astronomy will be SCUBA-2, the next generation bolometer camera for the JCMT. This will allow wide-field sub-mm mapping ~100 times faster than before. This will permit the first sub-mm maps covering scales of ~1 sq. deg., and is therefore ideally suited to the UDS.

On a shorter timescale, an ambitious JCMT proposal has been submitted (PI Dunlop) to conduct a shallow survey with SCUBA (8 mJy at 850 micron) covering 0.5 sq. deg. The list of Co-Is includes everyone in the UK community involved in sub-mm surveys. If approved, this survey would be complete by mid-2004. The proposed field is the same field that we propose for the UDS.
